Review: The Cornwall Adventure Tour

Introduction

By Willem van Westbroek

The Cornwall Adventure tour is a very unique experience with a high dose of fun; it’s a great opportunity to see something completely different than London or any other city because it has a very relaxed vibe due to the surfing culture which inhabits the town of Newquay, this tour is hosted by Explore South West.

This tour will give you a great chance to see a completely different side of England while driving through the country and stopping at some cool locations. Your guides will take you past cool places like Stonehenge, Newquay, St Ives, and Porthleven, also you will see some cool bars if you are up for it and of course the 3rd day is the day when you get to choose a cool activity such as surfing or coasteering.

Personal Experience

The pickup for our tour started at 10 AM nearby the Hammersmith tube station where we were picked up in a BioTravel bus. Once you are in the bus I thought the tour guide did a great job setting the mood for the upcoming trip with a bunch of relaxing music and some surf movies on the TV.

Our first stop on the tour was the famous and mysterious Stonehenge, the tour guide we had was quite enthusiastic about Stonehenge and explained how it got there and what its purpose most likely was, but I won’t spoil that, you can find that out for yourself!

After a few more hours relaxing in the bus you will finally arrive in the town of Newquay in Cornwall, here you have the chance to check in to the hostel and put all your belongings away so you can explore the town or the beach. Of course we went straight for the bar at the hostel which was quite nice and is a great way to meet everybody else on the tour. In my experience the first day sets the tone for the entire trip, which is to have a lot of fun while seeing a lot.

Day 2 consisted of an early wakening from our precious sleep to find the town of St Ives, a nice quiet little town where you can get excellent breakfast in any street, after breakfast while you have time to roam around by yourself be sure not to miss the beautiful coastline. After some relaxing in St Ives the tour moves on to Porthleven, unfortunately we were unable to go to the planned St. Michaels Mount but we were treated to a nice pasty and cider in Porthleven.

Day 3 is probably the hardest to get out of bed but the most exciting as this is the day we did our activity, our group of 12 was split up into people who wanted to go coasteering and people who wanted to go surfing. Naturally I chose surfing because I have always wanted to do that. We had a great surf instructor who taught us newbies how to get up on our boards. After a good 3 hours of wiping out on the waves and taking a beating we dragged ourselves back to the hostel where soon after we departed back to London.

Personally I think this tour is actually really cool, the tour guides are young and really live the life which you experience on this tour. You are taken past unique locations which I am sure you would otherwise never see. The nightlife is a lot of fun with the group and even just hanging by the beach while drinking a few beers can be really amazing. So if you feel up for something more adventurous than your average visit to the south I definitely recommend going on the Cornwall Adventure Tour!

Directions

If you are leaving from the Generator simply walk to Kings Cross station and take the Hammersmith line southbound, can’t miss the final stop Hammersmith.

Hot tip

Bring warm clothing! The hostel in Newquay is practically on the beach so during the fall/winter months it can get quite chilly there, also after surfing or coasteering you might want to warm up! Also if you want to get a few drinks around town be sure to bring your passport as bars or shops in Newquay require either a British ID or driver’s license or your passport.
