Information
Portobello Road Markets are insane. It is the worlds largest antique market and one of the most interesting and lively one’s in London. The market really springs to life on a Saturday but the shops are open throughout the week.
My Experience.
Although most people will tell you to get off at Notting Hill for the Markets I think it’s better to get off at Ladbroke Grove and go backwards. Sometimes it’s so hectic on a Saturday you may just get pushed along in the crowd. Coming from Ladbroke Grove the first type of stalls you will see are clothing stalls which can be good for picking up a one off or maybe even a budding new designer as many young designers start out here. The further you head along you will then get onto the street from here there is so much good food it’s not even funny. I recomend you try whatever smells good you won’t be dissapointed. Feeling guilty about pigging out take advantage of the abundance of fresh british fruit or some exotic caribean fruit available at one of the many stalls on the side of the road.
After a good feed the markets the markets will start to get a more antiquey feel as you keep wandering along where you can buy anything from books and toys to antique furniture.
Hot Tip
Haggle a bit you never know what price you might get.
Step off some of the side streets there is some cool record stores and cute cafes to take a break from the crowd. See if you can find that famous blue door from Notting Hill. If your not keen on crowds visit on a Friday but I think the crowds on Saturday create the great atmosphere that make these markets so famous.
Getting There
Take the tube and get off at either Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill from there it will be well signposted.
