Big Ben chimes for visitors to London

London is full of popular tourist destinations which are bound to mean any trip to the city is a busy event full of sightseeing.

One of the city’s most instantly recognisable landmarks is Big Ben, which can be heard chiming out the time across the River Thames every hour.

The name Big Ben refers to the 13 ton bell inside the tower, rather than the clock and it is named after first commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall.

Looming over the Houses of Parliament the impressive clock has stood the test of time and also survived a Second World War bomb attack which destroyed the Commons Chamber of Parliament.

Although the tower is not open to the public, a walk along the Thames and past the historic government buildings can give visitors an impression of its grandeur.

However, any British residents with a particular interest can book a tour in advance through their local member of parliament.
