"Take in" Japanese play at London’s Barbican

5th-8th May 2010

Culture vultures visiting London will have the opportunity to take in a Japanese play at the capital’s Barbican Theatre next month.

However, those who cannot speak the language need not fear they won’t be able to understand what’s going on as the production of Musashi features English subtitles.

Set in the 17th century, the play sees swordsman Kojiro Sasaki set out on a mission for revenge.

Starring Japan Academy Award winner Ryo Katsuji and Tatsuya Fujiwara, the play is directed by Yukio Ninagawa who returns to the London theatre following his production of Twelfth Night After William Shakespeare.

Through the use of the contemporary comedy elements of Noh and Kyogen, the message of Musashi is that seeking vengeance is ultimately a pointless task.

Tickets for the production start from £10.

Theatre buffers may also want to “Take in” I Went To The House But Did Not Enter performed by the Hilliard Ensemble which is due to run at the Barbican from April 28th.
