This coming August Bank Holiday weekend will see Europe’s largest festival celebration take place in London as the 2009 Notting Hill Carnival gets underway.
The event, which has taken place every year since 1966, is expected to attract over one million revellers and may be top of the list of things to do for visitors in the capital during the final weekend in August.
Covering 20 miles in west London, the carnival sees a combination of bright costumes, music, stalls and floats creating an authentic Caribbean atmosphere.
Those paying a visit on Saturday the 29th will be able to see the annual steel band competition, however it is Monday the 31st when most of the action takes place, with the carnival starting on Great Western Road during the day and parties continuing along the route long into the evening.
The very first Notting Hill Carnival was intended to showcase the steel band musicians that performed at Earls Court every weekend and drew Notting Hill’s Caribbean residents out of their houses as they paraded through the streets.
