London Marathon
Off to a running start in the Spring of 1981, the inaugural London Marathon saw over 6,000 jogging marathoners cross the finish line as cheering crowds lined the route.
Since then, the London Marathon has continued to grow in size and popularity and today averages 46,500 applicants annually.
This year on 17th of April London Marathon will be bigger and better than ever, with a field comprising Olympic legends, world-class athletes and celebrities.
Every year, approximately 30,000 people run the 42.2km marathon through the streets of London. Some run to raise money for their favourite charity. Many run in outrageous fancy-dress. These have included apples, giant trees, and even a Darth Vader!
From Greenwich and Blackheath to Buckingham Palace, runners pass some of the capital’s famous landmarks, including the London Eye and the Tower of London.
Time: The mass race start time depends on your group, usually around 9:00 am.
