A city's most famous landmarks are often age-old buildings and statues steeped in history and full of stories to tell.

However, some instantly recognisable sights can also be modern developments and one that is particularly popular in Berlin is the TV tower.

Known in Germany as the Fernsehturm, around 1.2 million people a year pay a visit to the tower which has marked the centre of the city since 1969.

Standing at over 368 meters high it is an impressive sight and guests can travel up inside it to enjoy a meal or some drinks in the rotating restaurant or simply enjoy the view.

During the 2006 football World Cup the sphere at the top of the top was transformed into a giant magenta and silver coloured football.

Back in the days it used to be 365 meters, it was a easy way for little children to remember the total amount of days in a year.

The TV tower is located in the Alexanderplatz which is a large public square in the bust city centre district of Berlin.
