A trip to Germany could include an excursion to the Berlin Wall Memorial to learn more about the city’s past.
It is situated on Bernauer Strasse, which was divided by the structure, a move that led to many escape attempts, both fatal and successful.
Established in 1998 in memory of the division of the city from August 1961, it is part of a “commemorative landscape” that is being developed in the area to honour the victims of the East German regime Designed by architects Kohlhoff & Kohlhoff following a competition, it comprises 60m of former border and integrates remnants of it through an artistic interpretation.
The Berlin Wall has played an important role in German history and its destruction in 1989 marked a key moment in the end of divisions between the east and west of Europe.
In addition to the memorial, those paying a visit to the German capital can also explore the Berlin Wall Documentation Center and the Chapel of Reconciliation.
