Visit the Berlin wall – the symbol of a divided city

Possibly one of the most well-known landmarks in the German capital, the Berlin wall stands as a symbol of the city’s history and is a must-see attraction for tourists.

The wall was built in August 1961 and served to divide the city into East and West Berlin.

It had an average height of 11.8ft and 91 miles of barbed wire was used to create the barricade which separated the city for more than 28 years.

Many people died attempting to flee the east of the city into the west and it became a symbol of the iron curtain between the two regions of Europe.

The wall eventually came down in 1989 when the government announced that restrictions controlling the movements of citizens between the two areas had been lifted.

Part of it still remains today so that visitors can imagine what life may have been like to live in a divided city and it is covered in colourful graffiti, designs and political messages which have been added over the years.

Tourists can also follow where it once stood as many of the streets are marked with a double row of paving stones.
