No need to be a metalhead for visiting this amazing bar!
Review by Felix Koegler
It’s just one of those nights when you don’t want to go to a club, but at the same time you’re to restless to watch the same film on television for the 10th time in a row, and unfortunately all of your friends do have the bright idea to go to a club or to enjoy that film for the 10th time. Not a good foresight for a fun night, you might think. This would be true indeed, if there wasn’t a place called Paule’s Metal Eck. And this is exactly where I’m going right now!
My experience
Ok, let me quickly put on a War From A Harlots Mouth band shirt and there we go. It’s hard to believe, but you don’t need to look like a metalhead to come in, so no one will look funny at you. But yes, I’m simply a metal nerd and a metal kid, so I simply have to look like metal for personal reasons.
In high anticipation of my cherry juice I run through the swing doors and immediately I feel that this is a place worth it living for. A place that reminds you of a local youth centre. Only with beer instead of lemonade.
I go to the bar to order my cherry juice with a lot of ice and a slice of lemon and I pass the pool tables and the sofas before reaching the smoker’s area. When I light my fist cigarette, I can’t resist admiring the polystyrene wall covering once more. Suddenly out of nowhere a voice reaches my ears: “Hey man, what are you doing here? Cool place here’ isn’t it?”. It’s an old school pal. It’s good to see him again.
After some chitchat about our exciting lifes, we head to the room with the pool tables, in which you’re fortunately still allowed to smoke. Yes, this place is the way it should be. Playing pool costs € 1, and here at Paule’s you don’t have „No-it’s-my-turn“-conversations. Fair play, that’s what it’s all about. Even after we’ve lost, we still shake hands with the winners (because that is part of the game as well), and after deciding that playing pool is not really our pub sport anymore, we head for the darts. Unfortunately I lost our battle with 10 to 2.
I look at my watch and realize it is 6pm already, but still the “Eck” is full of people and the staff is still serving beer with a smile. It doesn’t look like this place is going to close soon. But for us it’s time to go home.
Directions
I always go to Paule’s Metal Eck from my home, but I write this review for you, so of course I will describe how to get there from the Generator Berlin. All right, we take the tram that stops right next to the Geny Berlin. It doesn’t even matter which line you take, as long as it’s going in the direction of Alexanderplatz. We go only one stop until Landberger Allee/Petersburger Strasse and change there for the M10 tram in the direction of Warschauer Strasse. Oh damn, we have to do a short sprint because the tram is already there! Pfieeeow, we made it. We get off the tram at Grünberger Strasse. From there it’s only a Katzensprung to the “Eck” (that’s what the Berliner denizens call it). Simply walk down the Grünberger Strasse. The first side street is the Simon-Dach-Strasse, of which I don’t need to tell anything, since Vincent, the crazy London based Dutchman already did that in his review. In the Simon-Dach-Strasse you go right, and you’re there!
Hot tip
No need for a hot tip. This entire place is a hot tip already. Even if you don’t meet an old school friend, there is still a big chance of meeting friendly people, with whom you can talk and laugh the entire night. The prices of the drinks won’t make you poor. Paule’s Metal Eck is a pub with personality, and without all the superficial bullshit that seem to rule in so many other bars. It’s simply a fantastic place.
Convince yourself.
