Remember The ‘Victims Of War And Tyranny’

Neue Wache, or New Guardhouse, is a memorial in Berlin, which was originally built for the troops of the Crown Prince of Prussia.

The building was constructed from 1816 to 1818 under plans created for the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm III.

However, after World War One it was decided that Neue Wache should become a memorial site for the German victims of war.

Since 1993 it has been the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Victims of War and Tyranny.

The impressive stone building, with its large entrance columns, is a stunning sight for visitors and was restored to its current condition after it was badly damaged by bombs in the Second World War.

Inside, the remains of an unknown German soldier and an unknown concentration camp victim have been enshrined in the building and tourists can also view the controversial sculpture Mother with her Dead Son by Kathe Kollwitz.

To commemorate the Holocaust, a memorial was built in Berlin which, in 1995, was dedicated to the six million Jews who lost their lives.
