Former red light district offers retail therapy

Previously the heart and soul of Berlin’s nightlife, the former red light district is now a busy shopping street in Germany’s capital.

Located on Friedrichstrasse, the area was known during the 1920s as the epicentre of Berlin’s party culture, according to Sandeman’s New Berlin Tours.

It was full of jazz bars, cabaret shows laden with political satire, painting, literature, theatre, music and photography.

However, when the Nazis came to power the red light district was considered to be the epitome of everything that was wrong with Germany, resulting in the closure of 250 bars, clubs and brothels.

Now, it is a major shopping and cultural hub in the capital and visitors to Berlin may like to take an afternoon off from sight seeing to indulge in a little retail therapy in the city.

Friedrichstrasse is about 3.5 kilometers long and the train station which stands in the area has been completely renovated in recent times.
