Situated between the River Spree and Kupfergraben in Berlin lies Museum Island, which is home to buildings full of many treasures that may interest those visiting the city.
Archaeological collections and art from the 19th century are housed in the island’s complex, the development of which began when the Altes Museum was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
King Frederick William III then used this building to make works of art accessible to the public for the first time in 1830.
Museum Island was completed in 1930 with the opening of the Pergamon Museum,
although up to 70 per cent of the buildings were destroyed during the Second World War.
Nowadays, the collections of art and historical objects which were divided between east and west Berlin due to the conflict have been reunited and the museum complex has become a World Heritage Site.
Those interested in Berlin’s past may also like to pay a visit to the museum at Checkpoint Charlie, which documents the history of the Berlin Wall.
