June 17th 1953 is likely to stand as an important date for many people in Berlin as it is when the first ever anti-communist uprising took place in the city.
Now, a memorial stands to commemorate the event which depicts a photograph showing a rioting crowd of East Berliners.
The protests back in 1953 first broke out among construction workers who took to the streets in anger against the communist government of East Germany.
These numbers then grew to incorporate many other industries with more than 50,000 workers joining in over 90 demonstrations across the country.
It was not until the Russian army crushed the rebellion that it was halted.
Tourists to Berlin who have an interest in visiting its various memorials may like to take a look at the new Holocuast Memorial, which stands to commemorate the six million Jews killed during World War II.
