Bebelplatz’s beautiful buildings hide a sinister past

The Bebelplatz square in Berlin was built as a centre for arts and science in Berlin by patron of arts Frederick the Great, who became the ruler of Germany in 1740.Bebelplatz-Berlin

Although it is surrounded by some of the most lavish structures in the city, it is often remembered and visited by tourists for another reason.

On May 10th 1933, Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister for propaganda and public enlightenment, organised the public burning of more than 20,000 books by Jews, Communists, and Pacifists.

A memorial commemorating the day is now situated in Bebelplatz, surrounded by such beautiful buildings as the State Opera House and St Hedwig’s Cathedral, which is modelled on the Pantheon in Rome.

The magnificent former Royal Library also graces the west side of the square and this building is now part of Humboldt University.

Another famous area in Berlin is the Pariser Platz, which is home to the Brandenburg Gate.
