Patrolled by its twin domes, the Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most striking areas to visit
while on a trip to Berlin.
Entering this beautiful square, visitors will be immediately taken with the two domed churches that stand on each flank. The towering constructions provide a spectacular symmetry to the focal point offered by the Konzerthaus.
Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Konzerthaus – or, as it was then known, the Schauspielhaus – is a much younger building than the other buildings dominating the plaza. Built in 1821, the neoclassical construction looks out to the Schiller monument that stands in the centre of the Gendarmenmarkt.
These days, the Konzerthaus hosts performances from the Konzerthausorchester Berlin as well as guest orchestras from Germany and abroad.
The story behind the iconic domes is a little stranger. Carl von Gontard added the famous towers in 1785 to the two existing churches – the Deutscher Dom and the Franzoischer Dom – though these towers in fact offer nothing more than aesthetic value.
