Get your Sunday’s relaxation in popular Prenzlauer Berg.
Review by Sabine Ranft
Sunday, 11am. My cousin and I were partying last night and now we have been sleeping out. There are no plans yet for today and we just want to relax our body and mind. For me, the best places to accomplish this are Prenzlauer Berg and the area around the Mauerpark and the Kastanienallee, one of Prenzlauer Berg’s main boulevards. In Prenzlauer Berg, countless pubs, restaurants, cafés, galleries and little shops create a day and nightlife atmosphere unrivalled in the rest of Berlin.
My experience
My cousin and I go to the Kastanienallee for breakfast. Although there are many options, but we managed to narrow them down to Godod, An einem Sonntag in August, and Schwarzsauer. All three of them are cozy and offer a tasteful breakfast for not much money. Today we decide to go to Sonntag im August, because the competition simply doesn’t offer an all-you-can-eat breakfast for € 3,-. We sit on the terrace at the Kastanienallee with ham, eggs, and caffe latte, and we watch the people on the streets. They are a mix of Berliners, immigrants, tourists, hippies, punks, and everyone else seeking a place to relax.
After our breakfast we walk down the Eberswalder Straße and we arrive in the Mauerpark (literally: ‘Wall Park’, named after the Berlin Wall that used to occupy this area). Here we stroll for hours over Berlin’s largest and most famous flea market. Here you do not only find second-hand stuff, but also the works of young designers, jewellery, and real antiquities.
It is afternoon and we’re getting hungry again. Just around the corner is the Oderberger Straße, where bars and restaurants are packed together. In the Kauf Dich Glücklich (which translates as ‘Buy Yourself Happy‘) you can buy the best waffles, and you can buy yourself some new sunglasses while waiting for your fantastic fresh waffle. With the waffle I can recommend taking a cup of tea made of fresh mint leaves. Hmmm!
We walk further down the Oderberger Straße and we view the beautiful old houses, which sometimes feature very interesting courtyards. Here you find seemingly hidden yoga schools, bicycle workshops, or simply some nice little paradises to live. We go right again on the Kastanienallee and in the early evening find our way to Prater, Berlin’ oldest beer garden. Here we relax once more underneath the old chestnut trees with German beer and bratwurst before we, completely satisfied, head back to Generator Hostel Berlin.
Directions
Take the M5, M6 or M8 tram at the tram stop close to the Generator and get off at Landsberger Allee/Petersburger Straße. Here you change into the M10. Get off at Eberswalder Straße. The total journey takes about 20 minutes.
Hot tip
In the Eberswalder Straße you will find the scene shops Stiefelkombinat and Who Killed Bambi. Take a moment to browse through the vintage clothing, boots and shoes that they sell. It’s a lot of fun!
